Actually, manhole covers are round so they can never fall INTO the hole.
@Jeremy: Not all are round. The round ones fit round holes at the top of round shafts. Why are the shafts round?
The shafts are round because they are the most efficient at resisting outside pressure. Manhole covers are round so they cannot fall through the hole, just as Jeremy stated.
The manhole question was asked by Microsoft, not Google!
